Answered Questions
Question: Just wondering why you said in a newsletter that you guys will not be touring for an indefinite period of time after these final few shows? Are you writing, or are you calling it quits? (Hopefully not the latter) I can't make it to the Boston show this time! I started school and my work schedule makes it so hard to get out :-( I can't believe I have to miss it, I haven't missed a MA show in so long!
Answer: We are officially taking an extended break in 2010, yes. This is for a number of reasons, and while not delving too in depth in the things we keep private as a band, I will break some of the news here. We're taking a break. Some of us got married, some of us are moving to Italy, some of us are working on a new album, some of us received a grant to study Environmental Economics at Harvard...and some of us are simply chilling out. So to clear things up...there was no fight, no internal domestic disputes, no creative differences...we all love each other. We just all felt that it is important to move away briefly from things you love, in order to harvest some new energy, and come back at it refreshed. In fact, this current tour is feeling like one of the most positive we've done to date. Hope this clears things up. Look for a full US/Europe tour in Summer 2010. Or maybe not?

Question: How do you feel about Lady GaGa?
Answer: How I feel about Lady Gaga? i feel that extravagant props, theatrical elements on stage, blood, and wires on stage can either be deeply moving...or deeply disturbing. In this particular case I am referencing the VMA performance. Which I was on hand for personally. Ironically, i really didn't know any of her music or much about her at the time....completely out of the loop...but was interested the theatrical nature of what she was all about. I guess the question is...what IS she all about? Music? Fashion? Theatre? The reason I answer this question, in a small degree of depth, is that this question isn't just relevant to Lady Gaga per se....but to the nature of pop stars, and pop music today. Is it music? fashion? business? escapism? The debate rages on. I don't know Lady Gaga...but sure, wish her the best of luck with whatever of these endeavors she's REALLY trying to persue. My guess? She makes a couple records...tours a few...had her fun... and starts a clothing line. Which will probably be wildly successful. It also is worth noting that I answer this question, because as of today, her massive 35-city tour with Kayne was just cancelled....due to horrendous ticket sales across the board. She can thank Kayne for that, not her own fanbase.

Question: Where do you get the inspiration for songs? PS: Toronto is a really great city to visit, eh? (Hint, hint.)
Answer: We haven't told anyone or confirmed this publicly yet....but screw it. I figured this is a good time: You heard it here first. Our next big tour is actually going to be a 53-night run in Toronto. That's right. 53 shows in 60 days. In 20 different venues in Toronto. We were talking about how we wanted to play a show in Toronto on our last tour, and it didn't happen. So why not do a full-on, balls-out tour there? Free concert tickets for life for anyone who makes all 53. Winter Toronto Tour '09/10.

Question: I know it's a little far, but would you ever come to visit paradise? As in Honolulu, Hawaii?
Answer: We get these would you ever come to (amazing place) sometime? questions a lot recently. The answer is...yes, yes and yes. I've never personally been to Hawaii. I believe Reilly has. I want to go. In a bad way. A long dream of mine has been to do a massive tour, from Australia to New Zealand to Japan straight on to Hawaii and the West Coast. A blistering month or so of criss-crossing incredible places until your mind literally spins. and the ending sentence to all of these answers is usually...."make it happen."

Question: how do you feel about doing a show in or near grand rapids, michigan...? and also, where do you guys find inspiration for all your amazing lyrics?
Answer: would love to... we played in Lansing last summer on our tour....and I shit you not, was perhaps the hottest night I've ever experienced on stage in my entire life of performing music on stage. I mean....sweating. Like a freak. Like you ran a 5k in 120 degree heat. It was bonkers. I also remember that musically, it was one of the better sets of tour. As for the question, I personally have relatives in GR, and we stayed there after the show that night. It was wonderful. Ate, swam, hung out. They were incredible to us. Good times. I'll definitely go back to Grand Rapids.

Question: I don't have a question really, I just think it's awesome that you guys do something like this. It's hard to find people like you or Max Bemis from Say Anything that like to break the barrier between the band and the fans. My band is about to get signed and I plan on doing my best to stay as close to the fans as possible, and this is a perfect way, so I'm stealing the idea and putting it on my band site!!!
Answer: Thanks Rod. It's important to note that we too are regular people, and we actually really do love speaking to the fans, getting feedback, etc. Just having a dialogue is truly important. We definitely are normal dudes, I think. However, the seldom weirdness comes from the fact that we all nearly abandoned most of our young-adult social lives, in favor of seclusion and isolation - i.e. practicing our respective instruments in our homes and bedrooms until near-mastery was achieved. I personally lost a lot of dates in high school due to this phenomenon - which I like to call the "the guitar is your only girlfriend" phenomenon. But yes, thanks for the shout. Keep writing.

Question: Would you guys like to have sushi with me?
Answer: Yes.... Preferably at Tei Tei in Dallas, Texas. I would have to recommend the Cornflake-encrusted Jumbo Shrimp...or perhaps the Hot Rocks with Kobe Beef filets...or perhaps the absolutely banging Seafood Salad. Or the endless rounds of Sake and Sapporo. But the answer is... Yes.

Question: well I've been a fan for a while, but it was disheartening to see the MA show is 18+. is there any particular reason why? because I would have really loved to go, but if there's a big reason, then I won't mope. ;)
Answer: im sorry that the show is 18+, but those are harper ferrys rules. We usually play at the middle east which is also 18+ and i dont remember the last time we played an all ages venue up in MA. Question: What do you think of the death of Michael Jackson? Were you fans?
Answer: Hey danny. Michael jacksons was such an iconic figure and he put out some great tunes....to say that it was a shock that he died is an understatement. We were all fans in our own right....he made such a lasting impression on the music industry so I think he will be remember for a long time.

Question: are there many tracks you left off of this album, couldn't help but notice that you left off 'long island'. what is your favourite smiths album? and what are your favourite jazz artists?
Answer: hey Twikki. there were a few songs that didnt make the album and "long island" was one of them. We dont like to cut songs off the record, but we felt that there were stronger songs than that to include. I am a big fan of "meat is murder" and "the queen is dead," but we are all huge fans of everything the smiths have done. Being a drummer, one jazz artist that I checked out recently stuck out in my head and that is Aaron Goldberg and that song is "OAMs Blues" check that one out!

Question: How can I design a poster or something for you guys? And I'm actually thinking about taking up the carrier of being a roady. I know it's a tough job, but someones got to do it. What sorts of tests and dangerous tasks would one have to perform to be yours?
Answer: For designing a poster, I would say that you should create one, and then send it over through our myspace. If you wanna be a roadie... you should be lifting weights, be ready to drive a van and trailer for 5+ hours at a time, and subject yourself to eating fast food all day. Good luck!

Answer: we actually have a database of photos, a big binder stockpiled with every single fan who has ever come to a NOY show. We write down their names, age, addresses, interests, and study it thoroughly before every set. You will further recall how no band member has ever forgotten your name. Coincidence? I think not.

Question: Dear NOY, Now that Bush is out of office, are you going to keep making music with political themes? It'd be pretty tough to put out songs about lower taxes being pass© or the personal crises of faith arising from a high-speed rail line up and down the East Coast. I'm excited to see what new directions you take. Your friend in Buffalo, Joe
Answer: To paraphrase, we will continue to make music that expressses political themes....but probably only the political themes such as how exotic animals and their grazing patterns in the African serengeti can affect Global climate change. Much akin to how a Monarch Butterfly flapping its wings in the far east can affect wind patterns and the temperature in New York City. To be honest, I'm sure there will always be one keen eye on the implications of a new regime, the abuse of power, and the overall standing of Government in America. Another sharper eye on....raw, uncooked vegetables.
